Used with EAP, the Mobius Axon Wireless Switch significantly reduces installation cost and complexity by combining power and data on the Ethernet cable. There is no requirement for extended AC or DC power out to where the Access Port is located. In addition, security implementations from companies such Microsoft (TLS) and Funk Software (TTLS) are supported. This provides flexibility when determining the appropriate authentication mechanism for WLAN devices and applications.

Rogue Access Port Control

The ability to detect and restrict Access Port adoption is critical to controlling network access to approved devices only.

Wired LAN Support

Feature                                Benefit

Network Policies

Policy-based network management is provided to effectively switch packet traffic based on rules that are configured in the wireless switch. The Mobius Axon Wireless Switch can also automatically detect and obey established wired LAN rules, while selectively activating QoS mechanisms per VLAN and intelligently grouping WLAN interfaces.

VLAN Tag Auto Discovery

The Mobius Axon Wireless Switch detects 802.1p, and 802.1Q settings, automatically extending wired LAN policies to your WLAN for integrated, simplified wired and wireless LAN management.

802.1Q QoS

Integrated support for IEEE standards-based packet tagging ensures that traffic from the WLAN moving to the wired LAN can be prioritized between LAN switches using 802.1p.

802.1p

Integrated support for IEEE 802.1p standards-based packet prioritization allows customers to provide different levels of priority to different types of traffic across the existing switched Ethernet fabric.  This allows you to establish wireless traffic policies based on data, applications and groups of users.

ToS/DiffServ

Integrated support for IEEE standards-based packet tagging so that traffic from the WLAN moving to the wired LAN can be prioritized between LAN routers using ToS or DiffServ.

IP Redirection/
Masquerading

Users on a specific WLAN can be redirected to the desired application server (Web, Telnet, FTP, etc) so that network usage is controlled based on wireless activity.  This is ideal for installations where a private, secure WLAN and an open WLAN for public use are required, or simply for restricting user access on a particular WLAN.

Layer 2, 3, and 4 Classifiers

Traffic can be forwarded, dropped, prioritized or redirected based on MAC layer, IP layer and Transport Layer properties.

Custom Classifiers

In addition to managing traffic MAC or IP layer properties, customer classifiers are also enabled such as application type (for instance, a CRM application).  IT Managers can create any number of combinations to control traffic coming and going through the wireless Switch.

Flexible Packet Filtering

The Mobius Axon Wireless Switch provides filtering for advanced network traffic control. Administrators can forward, drop or redirect packets based on application type, protocol, IP Address, MAC Address and more.

Cell Controller Hot Spare

A second Mobius Axon Wireless Switch can be configured for providing redundant services to the Access Ports and wireless traffic in the unlikely event of failure. This provides an additional level of assurance that the wireless LAN will remain operational in the event of a system failure.

Ethernet Load Balancing

The Mobius Axon Wireless Switch automatically balances the Ethernet Traffic load on two RJ-45 interfaces to optimize the available bandwidth.

Wireless LAN Support

Feature                                Benefit

Wireless VLAN Support - ESS to VLAN Mapping

The Mobius Axon Wireless Switch supports up to 32 wireless VLANs. A wireless VLAN is the extension of a wired VLAN on the air.  A wireless VLAN is created with establishing independent wireless LANs; each independent wireless LAN can have different policies for bandwidth allocation, security mechanisms or packet prioritization. As a result, the Mobius Axon Wireless Switch is extremely flexible when dealing with highly complex installations with different types of users, applications, devices and operating systems.

Application Prioritization

Administrators can provision network resources based on the relative importance of application traffic to deliver differentiated QoS.

Congestion Management

The Mobius Axon Wireless Switch has the ability to allocate portions of the radio bandwidth to effectively manage congestion on a per VLAN basis. This assures that no single VLAN will be allowed to exceed its allocation during peak system periods.

Service Level Agreements

Bandwidth can be allocated per VLAN and/or per Classification group. This allows a fixed amount of RF bandwidth to be portioned to a specific WLAN, group of users or application assuring a minimum amount of bandwidth is available based on the defined agreement.

Class-Based Weighted Fair Queuing

With class-based weighted fair queuing, traffic classes based on match criteria using classifiers can be defined. Packets satisfying the match criteria for a class constitute the traffic for that class. A queue is reserved for each classification group, and traffic belonging to a class is directed to the queue for that class. Once a class has been defined according to its match criteria, it can be assigned a percentage of the available bandwidth per VLAN. The bandwidth assigned to a class is the guaranteed bandwidth delivered to the class during periods of network congestion.

Automatic Access Port Adoption

Traditional wireless LAN access points require manual configuration before or during installation.  This demands additional skill and time for installing a traditional wireless LAN. Mobius Axon Access Ports require zero-configuration at the point of installation; they are automatically adopted and configured centrally by the Mobius Axon Wireless Switch. The result is simplified installation requiring less skill and labor in less time for deployment savings.

Access Port/Point Roaming

Many sites already have traditional access points installed.  With Symbol's Mobius Wireless System, mobile users can roam between the two systems (traditional/installed architecture and Symbol's Mobius Wireless System) without experiencing any service interruption. This is especially important for customers who want to slowly migrate to a full Mobius Wireless System without interrupting current operations.

Transmit Power Control

For sites requiring a more dense radio environment to build bandwidth capacity, the Mobius Axon Wireless Switch supports radio Transmit Power Control. This is configured at the Switch and can be part of a group policy as well. Symbol mobile devices will also automatically follow the Access Port radio transmit power policy to minimize radio inference.

Load Balancing

The Mobius Axon Wireless Switch supports Symbol Load Balancing on a per VLAN basis assuring optimal utilization of available radio bandwidth.

Long and Short Preamble Support

Radio clients that are not able to support the short packet preambles are nonetheless supported. This provides assurance that legacy clients (such as those with Symbol's Spectrum24 4111 radios) and other vendor's radios that are not able to support short preambles are supported on the Mobius Wireless System.

Proxy ARP

Symbol added Proxy ARP to its Mobius Axon Wireless Switch, allowing wireless client computers to sleep or temporarily roam out of the network coverage area and still maintain IP connectivity to the wireless backbone. This is critical for users who need to work a full 8-hour shift without battery interruptions.

PSP Mode Support

Integrated support for Symbol Power Save Protocol delivers the maximum battery performance for mobile devices when using PSP. PSP is an intelligent system that stores packets when the mobile device is in power save mode and reliably delivering them when the mobile device is awake and ready to receive data/voice traffic.

Voice Prioritization

Integrated support for Symbol NetVision® and SpectraLink® voice prioritization assures the best possible voice quality without sacrificing reliable data delivery to other applications.

Pre-emptive Roaming Support

Mobile devices can take advantage of Symbol's leading roaming support for mobile clients, ensuring they are always optimally attached to the wireless LAN.

Management Features

Feature                                Benefit

Web-based Management

The Web-based GUI provides administrators with easy, intuitive, flexible, and secure (Secure Sockets Layer) management of the WLAN by using any industry-standard Web browser. This allows anywhere, anytime management of the Enterprise WLAN. The Mobius Axon Wireless Switch's web interface is built with XML and CORBA tools, providing leading edge functionality, a familiar interface and open architectural design elements.

SNMP v1 and v2 and MIB

Supports standards-based Simple Network Management Protocol, allowing you to manage the WLAN with familiar, already installed tools.

CORBA Based

Use of CORBA allows the Mobius Axon Wireless Switch to leverage the benefits of Java and the C++ languages. Building reusable CORBA components also allows for rapid development; this is especially important when adding new features.

Telnet and Serial Command Line Interfaces

A standard feature on switches and routers, a CLI (command line interface) provides a secondary management path into the Mobius Axon Wireless Switch for IT associates more comfortable with Telnet or Serial Command Line interfaces.

Access Port Site Survey

When installing a wireless LAN, it is essential to survey the installation site for radio coverage using the same hardware that the WLAN will use in deployment. Software has been provided to allow for site surveying using the same Access Port that will be used in deployment. The survey does not require the Mobius Axon Wireless Switch to be installed and uses the same handheld or laptop survey tools already owned or those provided by Symbol.

Automated Firmware Management

The Mobius Axon Wireless Switch automatically provides the latest firmware to Access Ports on installation, assuring that the WLAN is uniform at all times. Administrators can elect to use a production or test version of firmware on one, many or all of the Access Ports at any time. This virtually eliminates the error-prone, time consuming task of updating firmware on traditional Access Points as it exists today.

TFTP Switch Configurations

Administrators can generate a configuration in one Mobius Axon Wireless Switch, export it to a text file and import it into another Switch. This can greatly accelerate the deployment of a multi-switch installation.

Extensive Support of "Wizards" to Simplify Complex Tasks

The Mobius Axon Wireless Switch sets a new standard for flexibility, performance and control. It performs out of the box - no configuration is required.  Step-by-step software-based wizards are provided for supporting defining additional features; and manual configuration is also provided

Mobius Axon Access Port

Feature                                Benefit

Compact, Aesthetic Design

The Access Port's small, attractive design can be mounted in three ways:  on the desk in a clear acrylic stand; on the wall; or placed above acoustic ceiling tiles with a discrete LED status indicator visible below the tile.  These multiple mounting options are provided with each Access Port ordered;  simple and easy to install, you're ensured cost effective, flexible installation options to meet your environment's needs.

Plenum Rated

The Mobius Axon Access Port is plenum-rated – they meet regulations for not smoldering in the case of fire.  Because Access Ports are plenum-rated and therefore certified for mounting in airspaces above ceiling tiles, no additional housing or parts are required to ensure installation safety.

Power-over-Ethernet

Power-over-Ethernet significantly reduces installation cost and complexity by combining power and data on Ethernet cable, eliminating the requirement for extended AC or DC power out to Access Port locations.  And, Mobius Axon Access Ports support today's power-over-Ethernet standards: Symbol Technologies, Cisco System and the IEEE 802.3af.  This ensures that while the Access Port supports proprietary power-over-Ethernet, it is also ready to migrate to a standards-based solution when required.

Integrated High Power Antenna

The integrated 3.5 dBi omni-directional cross-polarized diversity antenna provides the strongest wireless coverage possible regardless of how the Access Port is mounted.

Status LED

A visible blue LED provides health-status indication for the Access Port. Even Access Ports mounted above the ceiling tiles can provide health status in a discrete fashion.

No Local Firmware to Manage

Access Ports receive their firmware from the Mobius Axon Wireless Switch when they are installed. This eliminates the cumbersome, time consuming and error prone process of loading traditional access point firmware.

No User Accessible Ports

Since there is no firmware to manually load, the need for a serial or other configuration port is eliminated.  Solutions requiring accessible serial ports can increase security risks; the Access Port eliminates this concern.

Low Cost

Because the Mobius Wireless System moves the wireless LAN packet processing to the Switch instead of the traditional access point, the Mobius Axon Access Port is smaller with fewer hardware components than traditional access points.  This lower cost of product results in a lower cost to the customers.
