Motorola Wireless Switch System

The breakthrough WLAN architecture with intelligence centralized at the switch.

Motorola's Wireless Switch—
the industry's first
switched-wireless networking architecture—is the breakthrough
WAN technology that delivers significantly enhanced functionality and mobility management

Wireless Switch dramatically reduces deployment, management and technology upgrade costs associated with enterprise wireless network ownership.

In the wireless LAN (local area network) market today, enterprise customers need to buy, integrate and manage separate products for application-specific wireless security, network management and wireless connectivity. Motorola has engineered all these capabilities into the Wireless Switch, which centrally delivers wireless connectivity and features through low-cost Wireless Swich Access Ports.

The Motorola Wireless Switch uniquely appeals to all enterprise market segments:

  • The system provides investment protection to existing customers in retail, manufacturing, healthcare, government, transportation and logistics.
  • It dramatically lowers initial investment costs for the emerging healthcare, hospitality, education and general office space markets, where expenditures for laptop PC wireless applications have traditionally been difficult to justify at current system costs.
  • It reduces the technical, deployment and management challenges for Wireless Internet Service Providers (WISPs) rolling-out Wi-Fi wireless "hot-spots." Wireless Switch features & benefits

The Next Generation of Wireless Networking
Wireless Switch has achieved a level of innovation that has essentially moved wireless networking to its next generation. Until recently, a retail store with a pharmacy, for example, needed separate pieces of equipment to support and secure various in-store wireless mobile computing and POS (point-of-sale) applications. With Wireless Switch, Motorola has put all the essential capabilities into one system, so that organizations no longer need to buy separate pieces from multiple vendors, or costly pieces from one vendor, to achieve secure application-specific wireless networking.

Centralized WLAN management at a lower cost
The Wireless Switch System is a single wireless networking system that tightly integrates into the wired-enterprise network core and delivers advanced wireless services and connectivity to the network edge. This single system delivers centralized intelligence, management and security at the networking switch layer. The Motorola approach is significantly more economical when compared to enterprise-class 802.11b and 802.11a (or dual mode) WLAN access points and provides an intelligent adoption path for 802.11a and 802.11g.

Through VLAN (virtual LAN) architecting and policy-based networking, the new Motorola system can allocate wireless bandwidth, security and networking services by device, by user, by application and by location, all from a single access port.

Maximizing and protecting your investment. Enabling the future.
The Wireless Switch System goes far beyond the traditional dual-mode wireless LAN approach, providing an architecture that you can grow with. The system is open, extensible and expandable. There's no need to think of migration in the traditional sense. Its media independence is designed to support frequency hopping, 802.11b, 802.11a and emerging standards; Motorola is even providing an upgrade path to allow legacy access points to become members of the Wireless Switch. Class of Service functionality provides flexible, secure user access and application management without sacrificing performance.

The Motorola Wireless Switch represents a fundamentally new definition of wireless local area networking – a new architecture that organizes infrastructure into new, more powerful component parts.

The Wireless Switch can be rack-mounted along with other network equipment.

In contrast to traditional access points, the Wireless Switch features Access Ports for more cost effective incremental growth and simplified installation without the need for separate power lines.

The Wireless Switch centralizes control and management functions for the wireless network. The intelligence that until now had been designed into the access points of a WLAN have been moved to a central switch with corresponding improvements in functionality. This allows for greater flexibility and extensibility. For example, the Switch is based on Linux-based RTOS, allowing new functions to be added easily. And its 1U rack-mount form factor allows it to be physically secured with other network equipment.

A new and better WLAN infrastructure, the Wireless Switch is the WLAN system with centralized intelligence — unifying network access, security, policy management and QoS at the switch level. This provides the highest level of wireless security to protect your network, data and devices (without compromising service). Easier definition of rules for QoS and security (for greater management efficiency). Media independence and scalability (from FH to 802.11b to 802.11a to emerging standards).

Value at the edge: Access Ports

The Motorola Wireless Switch connects via standard 100BaseT cabling and related components (including standard Ethernet hubs and switches) to Access Ports. The Access Ports contain the wireless LAN radio and antenna. The key benefit of this approach is smooth, cost-effective incremental growth — since Access Ports are much less expensive than traditional access points. You also gain the ability to deploy new technologies without disruption to an existing wireless LAN installation. Plus, Access Ports are plenum-rated and can be mounted essentially anywhere. Power can be distributed to Access Ports over Ethernet cabling using Wireless Switch Power Ports, dramatically simplifying installation and eliminating the need to run separate power lines.
